Controlled Burn Scheduled for Lake Sonoma's Warm Springs Dam

Published May 21, 2018
SAN FRANCISCO The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in conjunction with Cal Fire, will conduct a controlled burn at Lake Sonoma’s Warm Springs Dam on Thursday, May 31. This annual event is required to control vegetation to allow for mandatory safety inspections of the earthen structure.

The park will remain open; however, there may be minor traffic delays near the Visitor Center throughout the day. Visitors are encouraged not to use Dry Creek Road during the operation, set to run between 9:30 a.m. and 11 p.m.

The controlled burn will also allow local firefighters to train in a safe, controlled environment that increases their readiness and capability to fight future wildfires. Adequate measures have been taken to ensure that neither the burn nor the smoke will create an undue health or safety issue to park visitors or surrounding communities.

Spectators and media are welcome to observe the burn from the Visitor Center or the Warm Springs Recreation Area. Media interested in shooting from within the burn area will be required to wear fire retardant clothing and check in with the Cal Fire Battalion chief at the base of the dam.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers owns and operates Lake Sonoma in Geyserville, Calif., and is one the nation’s leading federal providers of outdoor and water-based recreation.
