MOSS LANDING HARBOR
OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE

PROJECT LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION

This project is located in Monterey Bay, which is approximately 95 miles south of San Francisco. Operations and Maintenance (O&M) provide for three-year maintenance dredging of an entrance channel 200 feet wide and a lagoon channel 100 feet wide at a depth of 15 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW). The total length of the combined channels is about 3,200 feet, with widening at the junction of the entrance and lagoon channels and at the end of the inner lagoon channel. Preiodically, two jetties are inspected and maintained.

FY 20 AND FY 21 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Continuation of work on a Dredged Material Management Plan (DMMP), including finalization of the Environmental Risk Assessment.
  • Draft Plans and Specs are in progress. Final P&S effort will commence once maintenance dredging contract funding is received.

ISSUES AND OTHER INFORMATION

  • The Moss Landing Harbor District is the Non-Federal Sponsor (NFS).
  • This project did not receive funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), Title IV, Pub. L. No. 111-5, 123 Stat. 115, Feb. 17, 2009.
  • Emergency dredging at the mouth of the Moss Landing Channel was performed by Government plant in FY12 utilizing available funds allocated for the work on the DMMP (per NFS request).
  • The NFS, in cooperation with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), is currently interested in the USACE performing a Section 216 Initial Assessment (O&M funds) to evaluate deepening the navigation channel to allow safer and more efficient vessel transit to and from the Harbor and the MBARI facilities. No formal request has been received. 
  • The NFS has notified the SPN District regarding increased shoaling in the federal channel following the “2017 February Storms”.
