SAN FRANCISCO, CA (PIERS)
CONSTRUCTION

PROJECT LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION

The project, which is located on the industrial waterfront of San Francisco Bay, will remove or rehabilitate Piers 30-32, 35, 36, 70 (including wharves 6, 7, and 8), and 80, substantially in accordance with the Port of San Francisco’s waterfront redevelopment plan. The first phase of the project consisted of removing the deteriorated and partially collapsed Pier 36. Built in 1909 of both reinforced concrete and wood elements, Pier 36 was originally 721-feet long and 201-feet wide. Removal of Pier 36 made way for construction of the Brannan Street Wharf public park, the centerpiece of the South Beach Waterfront neighborhood redevelopment plan. The next phase of work calls for the removal of piles and sunken debris at Pier 70.

ISSUES AND OTHER INFORMATION

  • The Port of San Francisco is the NFS.
  • Funding was received in FY 2010 and was applied towards the demolition of Pier 36. This pier was already in the design phase by the NFS and its removal was on the critical path of the Brannan Street Wharf construction schedule. Pier 70 is next in priority. Pier 35 work has been postponed at NFS request. As the NFS provides details and scopes of work for the remaining authorized piers, and as Federal funding becomes available, the Corps will enter into agreements to cover the required work.
