  • Funds are being used for annual maintenance dredging of the Inner and Outer Harbor Channels.  Amount also includes annual operation and maintenance of the Fruitvale Avenue railroad bridge, environmental monitoring at Deep Ocean Disposal Site and Sonoma Baylands Wetlands Demonstration Site, and a jetty inspection.
  • Funds will be used for commonly performed maintenance dredging of the Inner and Outer Harbor Channels, operation and maintenance of the Fruitvale Avenue railroad bridge, environmental monitoring of Sonoma Baylands and San Francisco Deep Ocean Disposal Site, and real estate management of the inner harbor tidal canal.

ISSUES AND OTHER INFORMATION

  • The Port of Oakland is the major container facility in San Francisco Bay area and is a National Strategic Port.  The project was recently deepened to -50-feet MLLW from -42-feet MLLW.
  • Testing requirements are a growing concern for this project as EPA-required “Tier III” sampling and testing of material is a process that takes longer than a year – and therefore is impossible to accomplish when we are funded for dredging work on an annual basis.
  • Staff level conversations are ongoing to research scientifically responsible and environmentally sustainable practices while also enabling annual dredging to occur.
