The California Department of Transportation has applied to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, San Francisco District, for a modification to a Department of the Army Individual Permit to replace the original east span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge with a new bridge immediately to the north. This modification would allow for the controlled implosion instead of the mechanical demolition of Piers E4 - E18 of the original bridge.
