PROJECT LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION

Contra Costa Canal is located in Contra Costa County, approximately 55 miles east of San Francisco, California. This canal provides water for municipal, industrial, and agricultural purposes. The proposed project will improve the security and quality of the Contra Costa Water District’s (CCWD) fresh water source in the Contra Costa Canal.  Specifically it will improve public safety, increase system security, reduce seepage into and out of the canal, and reducing flood risks along the unlined portion of the Contra Costa Canal. The proposed project involves installing up to 3.97 miles of buried pipeline in place of the existing unlined portion of the Contra Costa Canal.

ISSUES AND OTHER INFORMATION

  • The Contra Costa Water District is the NFS.
  • The purpose of the project was to eliminate four miles of federally owned (US Bureau of Reclamation) levees from the canal, and replace the canal with buried pipeline.
  • Decision document: Contra Costa Canal Section 205 Flood Damage Reduction Study, Initial Appraisal; prepared by the USACE under the authority of section 205 of the Flood Control Act of 1948.
  • The NFS has undertaken completion of the project under their own Auspices and have requested that we terminate the project and return unused funds
