PROJECT LOCATION AND Description

Humboldt Harbor and Bay is located in Eureka, California, which is approximately 280 miles north of San Francisco.  Operations and Maintenance (O&M) provides for annual inspections and periodic repairs of the North and South Jetties and for annual maintenance dredging of (1) the Bar and Entrance Channels to a depth of 48 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW); (2) the North Bay Channel to 38 feet MLLW; (3) the Samoa Channel, including its Turning Basin, to  38 feet MLLW; (4) the Eureka Channel to  35 and 23 feet MLLW; and (5) the Fields Landing Channel to 26 feet MLLW. The permanently designated Humboldt Open Ocean Disposal Site (HOODS) is utilized for the placement of all dredged materials.

FY26 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

FY25 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Performed maintenance dredging of the Bar and Entrance (B&E) Channels to the authorized project depth with the government dredge Essayons, in combination with a regional hopper dredge contract. 
  • Completed initial demonstration of a beneficial re-use nearshore disposal project with the Essayons by placing entrance channel sandy material in water adjacent to the eroding north spit area.
  • Conducted scientific monitoring of nearshore disposal performance to evaluate viability as a long-term beneficial re-use disposal area to be used in conjunction with HOODS in future B&E maintenance episodes.
  • Dredged the interior channels with the government dredge Yaquina as funding and equipment availability permitted.

FY24 accomplishments

  • Performed maintenance dredging of the Bar and Entrance Channels to the authorized project depths with the government dredge Essayons, and through a regional contract. 
  • Dredged the interior channels with the government dredge Yaquina as funding and equipment availability permitted.

ISSUES AND OTHER INFORMATION

  • The Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District is the Non-Federal Sponsor (NFS).
  • Project relies on management and monitoring of the offshore disposal site HOODS.
  • Project relies on monitoring of adjacent shorelines to establish long-term erosion trends and satisfy conditions on use of HOODS and CZMA regulatory requirements.
  • Corps conducts comprehensive condition surveys of navigation structures to assess damages and prepare plans and estimates for needed repairs.
