Moss Landing Harbor

MOSS LANDING HARBOR
OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE

PROJECT LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION

This project is located in Monterey Bay, which is approximately 95 miles south of San Francisco. Operations and Maintenance (O&M) provide for three-year maintenance dredging of an entrance channel 200 feet wide and a lagoon channel 100 feet wide at a depth of -15 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW). The total length of the combined channels is about 3,200 feet, with widening at the junction of the entrance and lagoon channels and at the end of the inner lagoon channel. Annually, the north and south jetties are inspected and maintained.

FY23 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Continuation of the jetty repair effort including hydro and aerial surveys, armor stone quantity recalculation, revisions to Plans and Specs, review and certification, solicitation and award of a revised jetty repair contract.
  • Environmental coordination including sediment testing for maintenance dredging in FY24.
  • Geotechnical investigation of hard material in the navigation channel that was not able to be dredged by the contractor in FY20.

FY24 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • The PDT has completed sediment testing in conjunction with dredging the federal channel in 2024.

ISSUES AND OTHER INFORMATION

  • The Moss Landing Harbor District is the Non-Federal Sponsor (NFS).
  • The harbor’s two jetties are inspected annually.  Funds were received in FY20 to perform repair work on the north jetty. PDT determined repair of the south jetty would be advantageous to the government.
  • Winter storm damage in January 2023 triggered a change in repair design and the Jetty Repair contract was terminated.
  • Jetty repair was also scheduled for FY23, but the PDT decided to postpone based on concerns the jetty repair barges would be in the way of the dredge, and Environmental Coordination required additional time to complete (Tier III testing required).
