PROJECT LOCATION AND Description

Santa Cruz Harbor is located on the California coast approximately 60 miles south of San Francisco. Project Operations and Maintenance (O&M) provides for maintenance of two jetties, 850 feet and 1,125 feet long. Maintenance dredging (currently the responsibility of the Santa Cruz Harbor District) includes: (1) an entrance channel to a depth of -20 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW), 100 feet wide, and 900 feet long; (2) thence to -15 feet MLLW for an additional 370 feet; (3) an inner harbor channel to -15 feet MLLW, 150 feet wide, and 800 feet long; (4) thence to -10 feet MLLW for an additional 600 feet; and (5) a turning basin to -10 feet MLLW, 300 feet wide, and 207 feet long.

FY23 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Funds will be used for Federal share of maintenance dredging costs and MOA administrative costs.

FY24 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Revision of Economic update to provide updated dredging costs for 2025 – 2030.

ISSUES AND OTHER INFORMATION

  • The Santa Cruz Port District is the NFS.
  • Under the November 2015 Memorandum of Agreement, the sponsor is responsible for dredging the harbor until the year 2025. The annual federal share of maintenance dredging costs is $385,000 until 2020. The federal share between 2020 and 2025 is 35% of the average annual cost incurred between 2015 and 2020.
  • Submitted a reprogramming request to Congress to transfer $500,000 from Suisun to fund Santa Cruz Dredging efforts in FY21
  • An assessment of the jetties was completed on 19 January 2023 by SPN coastal engineers. Severe wave action from the Dec 22 – Jan 23 storm caused the west jetty to lose armor stone and caused damage to the concrete cap. A work package for FY25 has been submitted for $1.3 million to repair the damage to the jetty.
