CENTRAL BASIN PIER 70 DREDGING
CONTINUING AUTHORITIES PROGRAM, SECTION 107
INVESTIGATIONS
Draft Detailed Project Report and Integrated Environmental Assessment (PDF)
PROJECT LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION
The project is located on the San Francisco shoreline southeast of the financial district at Pier 70 and the Central Basin. The goal of the project is to deepen the Central Basin to 32 feet mean lower low water (MLLW) to provide ship access to the largest dry dock on the west coast of the United States. However, access to the primary and secondary dry-dock operations is currently restricted by shoaling with a limiting depth of approximately 24 ft. MLLW. To remain competitive, the shipyard needs to be able to work on larger classes of vessels. Dredging the Central Basin to 32 ft. MLLW plus two feet of allowable over-depth will allow access for 95 percent of the classes of vessels that are likely to use the Pier 70 Shipyard.
At this time the Port has not identified an operator/tenant for the dry dock facilities at Pier 70. It is not known if and when that will happen. If and when that happens, it is expected that at least some minimal analysis will be required to verify Federal Interest, complete the environmental compliance, and complete the feasibility report.
