Colma and San Bruno Creek

COLMA AND SAN BRUNO CREEK FLOOD RISK MANAGEMENT
INVESTIGATIONS

PROJECT LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the Colma Creek and San Bruno Creek, which both flow through the southern part of South San Francisco into San Francisco Bay, the watershed contains residential neighborhoods that have been severely flooded in the past and habitats for threatened and endangered species. South San Francisco has been declared a flooding natural disaster by FEMA four times in the past 22 years, the most recent being 2017.  Multiple critical public infrastructures elements lay within the study area and would be severely impacted by fluvial flooding, including inundating local electrical distribution substations and the San Bruno Water Quality Control Plant, the only wastewater treatment facility in the local service area.  South San Francisco is home to over 200 biotech companies employing over 20,000 people, with another 40,000+ travelers in other industries daily.  Near term flooding costs estimates exceed $1 Billion and the value of property exposed to potential long term erosion and flooding damages exceed $35 Billion.  Transportation infrastructures servicing commuter rail, subway and regional bus services are also threatened by potential future flooding.
