San Francisco Airport Flood Protection

SAN FRANCISCO AIRPORT FLOOD PROTECTION
CONSTRUCTION, SEC 205

PROJECT LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION

Due to its geographic location and low ground elevations, SFO has many physical constraints.  It is surrounded by three cities and Highway 101 on the north, south, and the west.  The east is bounded by San Francisco Bay with a shoreline of approximately eight miles long.  The shoreline protection features, consisting of soil berms, concrete seawalls, and vinyl sheet piles constructed between 1983 and 2006, were built for erosion control and tidal flooding.  Gaps of various lengths between seawall sections will allow for water inundation into the airfield and the terminal areas during flood events.  The airport would like to request the Corps to study the potential for raising at least two reaches of the existing alignment so their system would provide 100-year protection, as defined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in their proposed update to the Flood Insurance Rate Map for the area under the CAP Section 205 Authority.
