Suisun Channel (Slough)

SUISUN CHANNEL (SLOUGH)
OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE

PROJECT LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION

The Suisun Channel connects Suisun City to Grizzly Bay, which borders Suisun Bay. Suisun City is approximately 30 miles northeast of San Francisco and abuts the southern border of Fairfield, California. Project Operations and Maintenance (O&M) provides for maintenance dredging of an entrance channel in Grizzly Bay that is 200 feet wide to a depth of -8 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW), a channel to the head of navigation at Suisun City that is 100-125 feet wide and 13 miles long to a depth of -8 feet MLLW, and a turning basin. This shallow draft channel is infrequently maintained.

FY 20 AND FY 21 ACCOMPLISHMENTS (based on the availability of funds)

  • Continue geospatial analysis.
  • Continue with Contributing funding to RDMMP work.
  • In FY21, this project has been funded for a disposition study.  This means that SPN will evaluate the best manner for the government to divest itself of this asset.  Options for disposition of the channel range from simply deauthorizing the channel to transferring the asset to a non-federal entity.

ISSUES AND OTHER INFORMATION

  • The City of Suisun City is the Non-Federal Sponsor (NFS).
  • The project was last dredged in FY 90 and was last surveyed in FY 04.
  • The controlling depth as of 2004 was -7 feet MLLW.
  • This channel is authorized for -8’, but has historically been infrequently maintained.  The channel was last dredged in FY1990, and there is no available disposal site identified if this channel were to be dredged again.
  • The NFS is responsible for providing a suitable upland placement site for future dredging, but no adequate disposal options are presently available.
