Levee Reports

Levee Safety

The importance of Levee safety recently increased due to the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. A need for a comprehensive and risk-informed approach to levee safety, including periodic reassessments, was clearly demonstrated.

We can help - through the National Levee Safety Program. Services provided include:

Levee Inventory

We completed an initial survey of federal levees in the San Francisco area in 2006. The levees in the survey are:
• Federally owned and maintained;
• Federally built and locally maintained; and
• Locally built and maintained, provided they meet Corps standards.
We can survey additional levees at the request of a local sponsor. We will continue to inspect all levees in the program bi-annually that are properly maintained.
Technical Risk Assessment

The Corps is currently developing methodologies to evaluate risk(s) associated with levees. We will assess the San Francisco area levees in the program using the methodologies developed once the methodologies are approved and funds are appropriated. It is expected that the approval will occur in the 2007 to 2008 timeframe, and the assessments will take 5 years to complete.

Revised Inspection of Completed Work Procedures

The Corps is in the process of updating guidance and will add risk assessments in the current levee inspection program requirements. We will report information obtained from technical risk assessments in the San Francisco area to local communities, the State of California, and other federal agencies.
