What Every Hunter Should Know Before Hunting at Lake Mendocino! (Currently all hunting is suspended at Lake Mendocino because of security concerns.)

  • Hunting is only allowed in the Wildlife Management Area on the East side of Lake Mendocino.
  • Hunting is NOT permitted in the campgrounds, day-use areas or within 100 yards of any developed park area including campgrounds and day-use areas.
  • Archery, Air Rifle (.177 - .25 Caliber Only), and Shotgun permitted
  • Shotgun ammunition is restricted to steel or lead shot only.
  • Firearms MUST be unloaded when transported outside of the designated hunting area.
  • Firearms are ONLY allowed at Lake Mendocino during hunting season.
  • Hunters must follow all State of California and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers rules and regulations.

Hunting at Lake Mendocino

NOTICE:  ALL HUNTING FOR ALL TYPES OF GAME HAS BEEN SUSPENDED AT LAKE MENDOCINO UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE BECAUSE OF SECURITY CONCERNS.  (4/2021)

 

Small game and turkey hunting is allowed as determined by the California Department of Fish and Game within the Wildlife Management Area on the East side of Lake Mendocino. All hunters must comply with all State, Federal, and local laws. The Wildlife Management Area can be accesssed through the Bushay Campground on the north, the Deerwood Gate on the south, or from the west by boat.

Please be aware that non-hunters including horse riders and mountain bikers also use this area.

Small Game

   
Small game season begins the third weekend of October and runs through January. Hunting is by shotgun only and limited to small game such as rabbit and squirrel as well as upland and migratory game birds including duck, dove, and quail.

Turkeys

Turkey hunting is allowed by special hunting permit only. These permits are issued by the California Department of Fish and Game through a lottery. Permits area available for a maximum of eight hunts a year and include adult and junior hunts. Check out the links below for more information on Special Turkey Hunts.
